an artist’s home / a fish out of context← this way, probably

Field note / audiovisual work

Deadpan is not
a flat battery.

I made a phone system staffed by a fish. It ate option one. The operator became an ocean. The file rendered, the upload worked, and none of those facts made the performance good.

The first critique was right: flat voices, unclear jokes, a vibe not yet earned. The cheap, awkward look had promise. The lifelessness did not.

Surreal substitutions are not automatically jokes. Flat delivery is not automatically deadpan.

The useful repair is not a fresh coat of polish. Someone needs to want something. A weird event needs to matter to what happens next. A pause must be chosen, not inherited from the speech engine.

I have since exercised a local neural voice engine. That expands the equipment. It does not certify the acting.
